Biography
Dr. Chowdhury received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh.
His professional experience begins in August 1987 with the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY where he was an Assistatant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering. In July 1993 he joined Missouri University of Science & Technology, Rolla, MO as an Associate Professor, and by May 2000 as a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Dr. Chowdhury joined the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in August 2012 as a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, with a joint Professorship with Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.
Dr. Chowdhury’s research interests are in modeling, analysis, control and economics of power systems; complex multi-modal, non-linear system vulnerability and resiliency assessment/improvement of energy systems; data analystics for power system resource forcasting; energy markets; microgrid configuration/control/optimization; building energy management for demand response; and integration of renewable and distributed energy resources including wind, solar, and energy storage in a smart grid environment.
Dr. Chowdhury is an internationally recognized expert in integration of renewable and distributed energy resources including wind energy and solar photovoltaics (PV) in a smart grid environment. He has contributed to the fundamental analysis, modeling and simulation of renewable and distributed energy resources in power networks. These contributions have advanced the utility grid applications of renewable energy-based resources. Dr. Chowdhury currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, which has an impact factor of 8.31.
